The best of rivalries

Created by Pete one year ago
Turning up to a race and catching sight of Hugh’s familiar and imposing stature I would be filled with the delight of some good pre race chat and dread of what would inevitably be a hard fought race. Whether it was a low key mid week event or an international mountain race Hugh would never give an inch. A fierce competitor who came into his own over long difficult Fell races.

I held such a deep respect and admiration for Hugh’s ability. I remember seeing Hugh’s run at the Yorkshire 3 peaks marathon (7th/3:07) and instantly realising he was within touching distance of GB honours. I remember fondly a close fought battle during the classic Llanbedr to Bleanavon Fell Race. Having gradually closed the gap heading over Blorange I knew my recce the previous week would make the difference. Sprinting through the narrow back streets of Bleanavon towards the finish we headed in different directions. Certain I had taken quickest route choice I approached the finish exhausted only to find Hugh had trumped me. One of many great battles.

Fell Running inspires not only rivalry but more importantly friendship. I am thankful for having had the privilege of calling Hugh not only a rival but a friend.
